Lou Gehrig, making the only appearance as a pinch-hitter in his 17-year career, begins his streak of playing in 2,130 straight games when he comes off the Yankee bench to hit for rookie infielder Pee-Wee Wanninger. Ironically, Wanninger is the player who ended Everett Scott’s 1,307 consecutive-game streak when he started the May 5th game in place of the team’s regular shortstop.
