The Rangers, bypassing future Hall of Famers Dave Winfield and Robin Yount, select high school pitching phenom David Clyde, who was 18-0 as a senior with fourteen shutouts and five no-hitters, in the first round (1st pick) of the amateur draft. The 18-year-old Westchester High School (Houston, Texas) standout will be pressed into immediate service as a starting pitcher for the Rangers, winning only seven games in 25 decisions during his three seasons in the Lone Star State.
