Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck acquires Larry Doby from the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League. He is the first African American to play in the American League, making his debut two months after Jackie Robinson.
On the same date 47 years later, the Indians retire the Hall of Famer’s number 14 in a long-overdue ceremony.
